The Defense Authorization Act of 2007 calls for significant U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) increases in its use of renewable energy resources. By 2025, DOD is “to produce or procure not less than 25 percent” of its total energy needs from renewable resources, such as power generated by the sun and wind. Furthermore, the January 2007 Executive Order (13423) issued by President Bush has directed that all federal agencies reduce energy usage by 3 percent a year through fiscal year 2015 or by 30 percent by 2015.
